Makaton's Goals
Makaton has five main goals in their mission, being:
Training, Sponsorship, Improvement, Development and Awareness.
Training
To offer training to members of the public – teachers, therapists, parents, caregivers or anyone who communicates with people with communication challenges – so that the needs of people with communication difficulties and those communicating with them are better understood and catered for.
Sponsorship
To source sponsorship to fund and support the:
- training needs of the communities who need, but can’t afford training.
- development of the organisation and its available resources.
- administrative functions of Makaton South Africa.
Improvement
To improve the quality of life of the 1.6 million South African children and adults who have communication disabilities but have no communication systems through the provision of the Makaton communication system.
Development
To develop:
- our range of resources – readers, activities, games, etc.
- the signs and symbols available in our Resource Vocabulary bank.
- new training courses to suit the needs of our community.
Awareness
To raise awareness of the challenges people with communication difficulties and those communicating with them face.
